Art Walk

Downtown Manhattan Kansas

Downtown businesses are the host locations for the first ever Juneteenth Art Walk. The community is welcome to stroll the district and view art created by local artists. The theme this year is “Freedom. Strength. Resilience.”

Patrons will have the opportunity to bid on artwork during a live auction at Douglass Activity Center (925 Yuma St.) on Thursday, June 16th. Proceeds will support future Juneteenth celebrations and artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of the sold canvas painting!

Co-written by our speaker on Wednesday BlacKKKlansman is a movie about, Ron Stallworth is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman, into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.

Kevin Willmott: Freedom/Strength/Resilience – what that means in 2022?

Kevin Willmott is an Academy Award Winning American film director and screenwriter, and professor of film at the University of Kansas. He is known for work focusing on black issues including writing and directing Ninth Street, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America, and Bunker Hill. His The Only Good Indian (2009) was a feature film about Native American children at an Indian boarding school and the forced assimilation that took place. In Jayhawkers (2014), he followed the life of Wilt Chamberlain, Phog Allen and the 1956 Kansas Jayhawks basketball team. Willmott has collaborated with Spike Lee, with whom he shared an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKKKlansman. The two again collaborated in writing Da 5 Bloods, released worldwide digitally on June 12, 2020.

Art is in the air! Join us for our Juneteenth Art Auction as an artist, spectator, or buyer. On a canvas, local artists will use their imagination to illustrate this year’s theme, “Freedom, Strength, Resilience.” The artwork will be on display on our website and around the community for you to enjoy. Join us on Thursday, June 16th, for a public auction of the artwork and a chance to own a part of Manhattan Juneteenth history.

Come to the new Douglass Activity Center (925 Yuma St., Manhattan, Kansas) from March 1st May (2022), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. to receive a 16” x 20” flat stretched canvas, instruction guidelines for the painting, and a brochure on the history of Juneteenth for referencing your chosen imagery.

You will sign an affidavit stating that you will guarantee a finished painting by noon, Monday, May 30th, 2022.

The Manhattan Juneteenth Committee has the right to refuse any artwork that is deemed inappropriate or offensive.

RETURN your finished painting to the Douglass Activity Center by noon on Monday, May 30th, 2022.
Through a partnership with Downtown Manhattan, Inc. (DMI), Manhattan businesses have welcomed the opportunity to display the finished artwork in their windows from Friday, June 3rd to Wednesday, June 15th. The artwork will also be professionally photographed and placed on the Manhattan Juneteenth website, DMI website, and Ruckert Auction website.
On Thursday evening, June 16th, the finished art will be auctioned off to the public, both in-person and online. Proceeds will help support next year’s Juneteenth celebration.
Artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of their sold canvas paintings. Paintings not sold remain the property of Manhattan Juneteenth.

Entry fee is $25.00 per category. A Manhattan Juneteenth Sponsor will provide $100 worth of grilling meat(s) to the first ten (10) teams who submit their applications to participate in the event.

Payment is due with application. Registration Deadline: Monday, June 13, 2022 by Noon (If you mail your registration we must receive it by this date – this is not a postmark date)

Juneteenth day of reflection 

June 19th is Juneteenth, however, Monday June 20th is the national holiday observing Juneteenth.  We would like to take this day to reflect on all that we have accomplished as a community and all that we still need to accomplish together.
